China’s 15,000km $425mn Peace cable connecting the country to Europe and Africa has connected to Kenya as part of Beijing’s digital Silk Road initiative to boost its share in global undersea cables.
Huawei is a shareholder in the cable’s builder, which plans more branches to Singapore and southern Africa as China pushes to own a 20% share of worldwide undersea communications cables by 2030.
US companies currently own and operate the majority, thus effectively handing them a dominance in internet traffic.
