On January 16, 2022, citizen journalist and Falun Gong practitioner Xu Na was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined 20,000 renminbi ($3,100) on charges of “undermining the implementation of the law.”
The penalty was imposed for sending photos and information about COVID-19 restrictions in Beijing to the Epoch Times, an overseas newspaper founded by practitioners of the Falun Gong, a spiritual practice banned in China.
